What’s the Difference Between Powdered and Powder-Free Gloves?

Powdered gloves are lightly coated on the interior surface, often with cornstarch. This makes the gloves considerably easier to put on and remove, especially if the hands are damp (e.g. due to sweat).

Powder-free gloves (for example, powder-free latex gloves) are not coated with an internal powder. Instead, they’re often polymer-coated or otherwise treated to make them easier to use.

Why are Powder-Free Gloves Generally Preferred?

Disposable glove technology has vastly improved, and this has closed the gap in usability between these and powdered gloves.

There are several reasons why powder-free gloves are now considered to be superior.

  • Lower allergen risk: powdered latex gloves, in particular, have a reasonably high potential for causing allergic reactions and triggering sensitivities. The powder used can bind to latex proteins, and these can become airborne when the gloves are taken off. If inhaled, these particles can trigger itching, watery eyes, and respiratory issues in some people. Using powder-free gloves, especially nitrile gloves, significantly reduces this risk.
  • Lower contamination risk: the powder used in gloves can contaminate surfaces, instruments, wounds, and foods. In a medical or surgical environment that must be sterile, this can result in complications, infections, or compromised test results. Using powder-free gloves ensures that no residue is left behind; this makes them the preferred alternative in laboratories, cleanrooms, operating theatres, medical procedure rooms, and food preparation facilities.
  • Clean and safe: not only are powder-free gloves safer in medical and food handling settings, but also in industries such as biotech manufacturing and electronics. Microscopic particles from glove powder can interfere with intricate processes – powder-free gloves are a cleaner, safer alternative.
  • Regulatory compliance: while there is to date no ban on the use of powdered gloves in Australia, health authorities such as the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and others recommend the use of powder-free gloves for the protection of patients and healthcare staff, for example. Furthermore, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) discourages the use of powdered gloves.

When to Use Powdered Gloves?

Powdered gloves still have their role to play. They can be beneficial in certain non-medical settings where the minimal risk of allergies or contamination is outweighed by the convenience of donning quickly. These may include:

  • Industrial settings: e.g. janitorial work, painting, automotive shops, crafting.
  • Low-risk food handling: e.g. packaging dry goods.
  • Low-contact or short-term use: where gloves are not worn for extended periods or changed often.
